"Flying high... Playing..... Working..... Learning together..... To achieve our best"
On Friday the children of St Bartholomews school had a masterclass on writing from Diana Shaw, creator of the Septimus Smythe stories. This was to celebrate a six week story writing project in conjunction with Leek college’s family Learning initiative. Parents have worked with Angela Whitmore from Leek College and staff from school on ways to help children with story telling and writing, and have then followed through with activities in the classroom. These have included puppet shows, story endings and beginnings, story boards and sequencing activities.
Mrs Shaw introduced her books to the children, who had already been reading Septimus Smythe and the Spectre Detectors and told them how she started to write, gave them ideas on how to tackle their writing and answered their questions. The children also shared their stories.
Jessica Kidd aged 7 said: “I loved it when she told us how Septimus had his head chopped off!” Georgia Bills aged 7 said she found the way the books were set out really interesting and Abbie Fryer-Winder added “ I really enjoyed Mrs Shaw reading her stories to us.” We are hoping working with Mrs Shaw will become a regular feature on our school calendar as we follow the exploits of Mrs Shaw’s characters and learn how to develop our own” said infant teacher Fiona Greener.
