Mrs Richardson

Welcome to Year 1

I am looking forward to the start of a new school year and sharing all the great learning experiences that are in store for your child. Keeping you, as parents/carers,

involved in your child’s learning is very important to me, so I would like to share some important information with you.

Key Information

Reading

· Reading is at the heart of our school curriculum. In Year 1, we share high quality texts during daily story times, and your child will take part in daily Shared Reading lessons.

· A phonetically decodable reading book, that your child has practised in school, will be sent home on a Friday.

· Your child's current target in reading will be recorded in their Reading Record.

· Your child will also have the opportunity to choose a book from our school library to share with you at home.

· Please comment in your child’s Reading Record when you have read with your child.

· Your child’s reading books and Reading Record should be brought into school every day; we collect books in on a Thursday ready for new ones to go home on a Friday.

Home Learning

· The purpose of Home Learning is to consolidate and extend learning done in school.

· Reading – alongside your child’s phonetically decodable reading book, most weeks, the children will have new keywords; they should learn to read these by sight.

Please revisit these regularly and keep them in their reading folders.

· Spellings – every week, the children will have a list of spellings to learn linked to the phonics skills they have been focusing on.

Spelling lists will be shared in your child’s Homework folder and a Spelling quiz will take place on a Friday.

Home School Communications

· I am available every morning and at the end of the school day to receive messages.

· If you need a longer appointment please arrange a phone call or book a meeting via the school office.

Drop-off and Collection Arrangements

· Year 1 children will enter school through the main entrance door from the playground at 8.45am.

· The children will be dismissed from the main entrance onto the school playground, directly to parents/carers at 3.15pm.

· If the person collecting at the end of the day is different to usual, please inform Miss Mellor before 2.30pm so they can notify the class teacher.

Snack

· Children in Year 1 are provided with a government-funded snack each day. The snack consists of a variety of fruit and vegetables.

Year 1 children are not required to bring their own snack to school.

· Please remember to send your child’s school water bottle into school with them every day.

School Uniform

· Children should come to school in full uniform.

· On Tuesdays, children should come to school wearing their PE kit.

-On Wednesdays, children should come into school with their Forest School clothes and wellies.

· Please ensure all items coming into school are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

I look forward to working with you and your child during the year ahead
